A catastrophic 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on August 14, claiming more than 1,900 lives, injuring more than 9,900 people and destroying homes, schools and hospitals. An estimated 1.2 million people, including over half a million children, have been affected.
Tropical Storm Grace, which drenched the country just days after the earthquake, has made matters worse, leading to flooding and complicating relief efforts.
Thousands of Haitians, including children, are in urgent need of shelter, clean water, medical care and protection. Hospitals are overwhelmed and casualties are expected to rise in the aftermath. The humanitarian situation is dire.
The quake could not have come at a worse time for Haiti’s people, who are still reeling from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, political instability and escalating violence.
