The Global Hunger Crisis Requires Immediate Action

The Government of Canada has committed to addressing the global hunger crisis.  Stand with us by calling on greater action from Canada to ensure that funding allocation to address the global hunger crisis is in the 2023 Federal Budget.

Drought, conflicts and other humanitarian crises are skyrocketing the number of children who are suffering from malnutrition around the world.

Right now, 2 million children are on the brink of death and are in need of treatment for severe acute malnutrition in the Horn of Africa (Kenya, Somalia Ethiopia). In West and Central Africa, an estimated 1.4 million children will suffer from severe wasting in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger and Senegal in 2022.

On June 23, during the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, Prime Minister Trudeau announced a new $250-million funding commitment to tackle global food security and nutrition, which includes $35 million funding to support UNICEF’s work in treating severe acute malnutrition, allocated at the United Nations General Assembly this year. UNICEF supporters like you helped influence this commitment.

We support the Minister of International Development’s mandate to increase Canada’s international development assistance every year toward 2030, to realize the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Greater action is needed now. Send a letter.

Nutrition lays the foundation for immunity and health. Not investing in nutrition now could leave countries vulnerable to future shocks and health crises, and make recovering from COVID-19 longer and more complex. Investing in prevention, early detection and treatment for wasting is critical.

Every child has the right to nutrition. By signing our action, you are sending the Government of Canada a clear message that increased financial commitment is needed to address the global hunger crisis.
